Would it be legal for a minor in Hawaii over 16 to keep a handgun in the glove compartment of his car?

I'm currently writing a script that takes place in Hawaii and I'm trying to figure out if it would be legal for one of my characters to have a handgun in the glove compartment of his car, I'm thinking if he could he would have gone out of his way to get every possible permit and license needed. He has to have it for my scene to work but I'm just trying to figure out if he uses the hand gun to stop the meth addicts from abducting this girl if he could go to jail for having the gun.
