Why are so many American Politicians millionaires (and billionaires)?

Aren't they, after all, Public Servants just like Teachers, Police Officers, Firemen, Sanitation Workers, EMT's and a host of other Civil Service Employees who work for the greater good at the sacrifice of Private Sector earnings?
